It is one of the most common IPTV complaints: everything plays perfectly at lunchtime, but from about eight o’clock the spinner starts appearing, just as the match or film you wanted to watch begins. Nothing has changed in your setup, so what is going on?
The answer is almost always peak-time congestion — too much demand for a shared resource at the same moment. The trick is working out where that congestion happens, because the fix depends entirely on the answer.
Why evenings are different
In the evening, almost everyone who uses the internet does so at once. Households stream TV, children game online, someone video-calls family and phones back up photos. That demand stacks up in three places.
1. Inside your home
Your own network gets busier: more devices streaming, more downloads, more Wi-Fi traffic. A router that copes easily with one TV in the morning can struggle with five active devices at night.
2. In your neighbourhood and broadband network
Broadband capacity is shared at various points between your home and the wider internet. With some connection types, many homes share local capacity. When everyone in the area is online, the speed available to each home can drop.
Wi-Fi also competes with neighbours. In flats and terraced houses, dozens of networks can crowd the same channels, especially on 2.4 GHz.
3. Along the route to the stream
Your video travels through several networks to reach you. If any link along that path is busy in the evening, your stream feels it — even if your own broadband line is fine.
Step 1: Prove it is a time-of-day problem
Guessing wastes evenings. Gather simple evidence over a few days.
- Run a speed test at the TV mid-morning or early afternoon.
- Run the same test at the TV during the evening when buffering happens.
- Note download speed, ping and jitter, and whether any tests show packet loss.
- Repeat on a wired device connected directly to the router at the same times.

Fixes for congestion inside your home
These are the fixes you control fully, and they often solve the problem outright.

- Move Wi-Fi devices to 5 GHz, which has more channels and less interference from neighbours.
- Change the Wi-Fi channel on your router if neighbouring networks crowd yours, or let it choose automatically.
- Pause heavy background tasks — game downloads, cloud backups and system updates — during viewing hours.
- Use QoS or device priority on your router to favour the TV.
- Add a mesh point near the TV if the signal is weak.
- Replace an old router that struggles with many devices at once.
Fixes when your broadband slows at night
If wired tests drop sharply every evening, the congestion is outside your home.
- Keep a log. Dates, times, wired speed results and ping. Specific evidence gets a better response from broadband providers than “it’s slow at night”.
- Contact your broadband provider with that log and ask whether there is known congestion in your area.
- Stream in Full HD during peak hours if your connection cannot sustain 4K in the evening.
- Consider a different connection type at renewal. Full fibre connections are often more consistent at busy times.

Fixes when the route to the stream is the problem
When your own tests look healthy but live channels still stutter at night:
- Try a different DNS resolver on your router or device. It can change which server your player connects to first and sometimes improves channel start times.
- Increase the player’s buffer slightly. It adds a little delay but smooths short dips — see our player settings guide.
- Try an alternative version of the channel if your list offers one.
- Report consistent patterns to your IPTV provider, including the channels, times and your location.
Big live events
During major matches and finals, demand spikes everywhere at once. Even well-run services and networks feel the strain.
- Connect by Ethernet before kick-off.
- Close other streams in the house.
- Start the channel a little early so any adjustments happen before the action.
- Accept Full HD if 4K struggles — smooth Full HD beats stuttering 4K.

What not to waste time on
- Upgrading to a faster broadband package without testing. If the problem is Wi-Fi or evening congestion upstream, more headline speed may not help.
- Constantly reinstalling apps. Time-of-day patterns point to networks, not apps.
- Restarting the router during the problem. It interrupts everyone and rarely fixes congestion outside your home. Restart at a quiet time instead.
