“What speed do I need?” is usually the first technical question people ask about IPTV — and the answer most websites give, a single number, is not very helpful. A household with one TV and a household with three streaming TVs, two gamers and a home office need very different connections.
This guide gives you realistic per-stream figures, then shows you how to work out what your home needs, and why a stable connection matters as much as a fast one.
Recommended speed per stream
These figures are practical targets for a stable connection per stream, with some headroom for live TV:

Why aim higher than the absolute minimum? Live channels can briefly need more data during fast motion, and your connection fluctuates. Headroom keeps playback smooth when either happens.
Work out your household’s number
Streams add up. So do all the other things using your connection. A simple method:
- List the streams that might run at the same time — for example, one 4K TV and one Full HD TV.
- Add their recommended speeds — 25 + 10 = 35 Mbps.
- Add other regular activity at the same time — a video call might use a few Mbps; a game download or cloud backup can use as much as it is given.
- Add a safety margin of around 20–30%.
In this example, a household needs roughly 45–50 Mbps available in the evening, not just on a quiet weekday morning.

These are starting points. Heavy downloaders and remote workers should add more.
Speed is not the same as stability
Two connections with identical speed-test results can behave very differently for live TV. Three measurements matter as much as download speed:
- Consistency — how much your speed drops at busy times.
- Jitter — how much the delay varies from moment to moment. High jitter causes stutters even on fast lines.
- Packet loss — data that never arrives. Even small amounts show up as freezes and blocky pictures in live video.

Your broadband speed is not your TV’s speed
The speed your provider sells arrives at your router. Your TV only gets what reaches it through your home network, and Wi-Fi can lose a lot along the way:
- Distance and walls reduce Wi-Fi speed and stability.
- The 2.4 GHz band is slower and more congested than 5 GHz.
- Older devices may only support older Wi-Fi standards.
- Neighbouring networks compete for the same airspace.

Speed needs by connection type
Different broadband technologies tend to behave differently for streaming:
- Full fibre — generally the most consistent option, with plenty of headroom.
- Cable broadband — fast, but can slow at peak times in busy areas.
- Part-fibre (VDSL/FTTC) — often fine for one or two streams; speed depends on distance from the cabinet.
- ADSL — frequently too slow or unstable for 4K, and tight for several HD streams.
- 4G/5G home broadband — can be fast, but varies with signal and local demand, and data allowances may apply.
- Satellite internet — newer low-orbit services can stream well; older geostationary services add high latency.
What if your connection is too slow?
You have more options than upgrading straight away:
- Stream in Full HD instead of 4K on secondary screens, or everywhere during busy times.
- Connect the main TV by Ethernet or powerline adapters to stop Wi-Fi losses.
- Schedule big downloads and backups for overnight.
- Use your router’s QoS or device priority to favour the TV.
- Upgrade your router if it is several years old and struggles with multiple devices.

Common myths
“You need 100 Mbps for 4K.” Not per stream. A stable 25 Mbps or more is a sensible 4K target; 100 Mbps matters when many things happen at once.
“More Mbps always means less buffering.” Only if lack of speed is the problem. Wi-Fi issues, device limits and peak-time congestion cause more buffering than slow packages do.
“Upload speed affects TV quality.” IPTV is almost entirely download traffic.
The short version
Plan for about 10 Mbps per Full HD stream and 25 Mbps per 4K stream, then add up everything your household does at once and add a margin. Measure at the TV, at the time you watch. And remember that a stable connection with good in-home coverage matters more than the biggest number on a speed test.
