If there is one change that fixes more IPTV problems than any other, it is how the TV connects to the internet. Buffering, freezing, soft pictures and slow channel changes can all come down to Wi-Fi — and a single cable can make them disappear.

Why live TV is fussy about connections
On-demand video can load well ahead, so short interruptions go unnoticed. Live channels can only buffer a few seconds. That makes live IPTV sensitive to:
- dips in speed, even brief ones;
- jitter — variation in how quickly data arrives;
- packet loss — data that never arrives at all.
Wi-Fi is far more prone to all three than a cable.
Ethernet: the case for a cable
Advantages
- Consistent speed regardless of walls, distance or neighbours.
- Low jitter and virtually no interference.
- No competition with other Wi-Fi devices in the house.
- Simple — plug in and it works.
Disadvantages
- Running a cable can be inconvenient or unsightly.
- Some streaming sticks need a separate Ethernet adapter.
A common worry is that many TVs have only a 100 Mbps Ethernet port. For streaming, that is not a problem: a single 4K stream needs around 25 Mbps, so a steady 100 Mbps wired link has plenty of room.
Wi-Fi: when it works well
Advantages
- No cables.
- Works for phones, tablets and laptops anywhere in range.
- Modern Wi-Fi can be very fast close to the router.
Disadvantages
- Speed drops with distance and walls.
- Interference from neighbours’ networks and some household devices.
- Shared airtime with every other wireless device in your home.
- Signal problems for wall-mounted TVs, whose antennas often face the wall.
Wi-Fi can be perfectly fine for IPTV when the TV is in the same room as a modern router, or has a strong signal from a nearby mesh point.
2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz (and 6 GHz)
Most routers broadcast on at least two frequency bands.

For IPTV, use 5 GHz wherever the signal is strong. Use 2.4 GHz only when 5 GHz cannot reach, and 6 GHz if both your router and device support it and they are reasonably close.
Making sure your TV uses 5 GHz
Many routers combine both bands under one network name and let devices choose. Some devices pick 2.4 GHz because it looks stronger, even when 5 GHz would be faster. You can:
- give the 5 GHz band a separate network name and connect the TV to it;
- enable band steering if your router supports it;
- check the TV or device’s network information to see which band it is using.
Avoid switching off 2.4 GHz entirely, as some older devices depend on it.
Alternatives when a cable is not practical
Powerline adapters
Powerline adapters send network data through your home’s electrical wiring. Plug one into a socket near the router, connect it with a short cable, and plug the other near the TV.
- Good: no new cables through the house; often steadier than Wi-Fi.
- Consider: performance depends on your wiring; plug directly into wall sockets, not extension leads.
Mesh Wi-Fi
A mesh system uses several units to spread strong Wi-Fi around the home. Placing a mesh point near the TV can transform reception.
- Good: covers large or awkward homes; some units have Ethernet ports you can use to wire the TV to the mesh point.
- Consider: units should have a good connection back to the main router.
Wi-Fi extenders
Simple extenders repeat an existing signal. They can help coverage but often reduce speed and add latency. A mesh system or powerline adapter is usually the better choice for live TV.
Coaxial networking
In some homes, existing TV coaxial cabling can carry network data using suitable adapters. It is worth considering if you already have coax outlets near your TVs.
