Android TV boxes are popular for IPTV because they run the widest range of player apps and connect to any TV with an HDMI port. They also vary enormously. Two boxes that look almost identical in photos can differ in processing power, video support, software updates and security.
This guide explains the specifications and features that make a genuine difference for IPTV, so you can choose a box that plays smoothly for years rather than months.
Certified or uncertified: the first decision
Android-based TV devices fall into two broad groups.
Google-certified Android TV and Google TV devices
These run Google’s official TV operating system, include Google Play and Google Play Protect, and receive security and app updates. Examples include Google’s own TV streamers and many devices from established electronics brands, as well as Smart TVs running Google TV.
Why they suit IPTV: reliable app installs, a remote-friendly interface, regular updates and far less risk of unwanted software.
Uncertified “Android boxes”
These usually run a version of Android adapted from phones or tablets. They are often sold with impressive specifications at low prices.
The trade-offs: no Google Play or an unofficial version of it, inconsistent performance, rare updates and, in some cases, poor security. Security researchers have repeatedly found malware pre-installed on some cheap uncertified streaming boxes.
For most households, a certified device is the better choice, even if a generic box lists bigger numbers.
The specifications that matter for IPTV
Video decoding: HEVC, VP9 and AV1
This is the most important and least advertised specification. Your box needs hardware decoding for the codecs your streams use:
- HEVC (H.265) — essential for most 4K IPTV streams.
- H.264 — supported by virtually everything.
- AV1 — increasingly useful on newer content; a good sign of a future-proof chip.
A box that decodes 4K HEVC in hardware plays smoothly and runs cool. One that cannot will stutter, however fast its processor looks on paper.
Memory (RAM)
IPTV players keep channel lists, logos and guide data in memory. Large playlists with thousands of channels and several days of guide data need more memory to scroll smoothly. Devices with very little RAM tend to slow down, reload apps and crash. Treat memory as a priority rather than an afterthought.
Storage
Apps, updates, caches and guide data all use storage. Devices with very small storage fill up quickly, and Android slows noticeably when storage is almost full. More storage gives you room for a player, a few other apps and normal caching.
4K, HDR and HDMI
For 4K IPTV, check:
- 4K output at 50 and 60 Hz over HDMI 2.0 or newer.
- HDR formats — HDR10 and HLG as a minimum; Dolby Vision or HDR10+ if your TV supports them. Our HDR explainer covers the differences.
- HDCP 2.2 support for protected 4K playback.
Automatic frame rate and dynamic range switching
A box that can match frame rate and match dynamic range to the content avoids judder in sport and washed-out colours on SDR channels. It is one of the features that separates a good TV device from a basic one.
Network connectivity
- Ethernet port — strongly recommended for live TV. Even a 100 Mbps port is several times what a 4K stream needs; gigabit is a bonus.
- Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 — useful when a cable is not practical. Wi-Fi 6 copes better with busy home networks.

Remote control
A good remote makes a daily difference: dedicated channel or guide buttons, voice search and the ability to control the TV’s power and volume.

Red flags when shopping
- “Fully loaded” or “free TV forever” claims. These boxes typically come with unlicensed apps pre-installed, which can be unreliable, unsafe or unlawful.
- Specifications that seem too good for the price. Some listings exaggerate memory or storage figures.
- No brand, model name or support website. No updates are likely.
- An old Android version at launch. Apps may stop supporting it quickly.
- A box that asks you to disable security settings before it works properly.
Should you buy a box, a stick or use your TV?
A box is not always the best option:
- Streaming sticks are compact and often cheaper, but may have less memory and no Ethernet port.
- Your Smart TV’s built-in apps avoid extra hardware, but player choice and speed vary.
- Boxes usually offer the most power, storage and connectivity.

Once you have a device:
- Install updates before anything else.
- Connect by Ethernet if possible.
- Set display output to 4K with frame rate and dynamic range matching enabled.
- Install a TV-friendly player from Google Play.
- Enable hardware decoding in the player.
