How to Set Up IPTV on Android Phones, Tablets and TV Boxes

Android is the most flexible platform for IPTV. It runs on phones, tablets, Google TV streamers and a huge range of TV boxes, and it has the widest choice of player apps. This guide covers setup on phones and tablets, on Android TV and Google TV devices, and on uncertified Android boxes.

Before you start

• Your IPTV login details: an Xtream Codes login (server, username, password) or an M3U playlist link.
• A Wi-Fi or wired connection. Avoid first-time setup over mobile data, as channel lists and guides can be large.
• The latest Android and Google Play updates installed.

Part 1: Android phones and tablets

1. Install a player

1. Open the Google Play Store.
2. Search for “IPTV player”.
3. Choose a well-reviewed player that supports Xtream Codes or M3U, has been updated recently and is designed for phones — some popular players are made only for TVs.
4. Tap Install.

2. Add your login

1. Open the player and tap Add playlist, Add user or +.
2. For Xtream Codes, enter the server address exactly as provided (including http:// and any port number), then your username and password.
3. For M3U, paste your playlist link. If you have a separate EPG address, add it in the guide settings.

Tip: copy and paste details from your login message rather than typing them. Most login problems come from a single mistyped character.

3. Set up Picture-in-Picture

Picture-in-Picture lets you keep a match playing in a small window while you use other apps.

1. Open Settings → Apps → Special app access → Picture-in-picture (the path can vary by manufacturer).
2. Allow it for your player.
3. In the player’s settings, turn on its Picture-in-Picture option if it has one.

4. Save mobile data

Streaming uses a lot of data: roughly 1.5–3 GB per hour in HD or Full HD and 7 GB or more in 4K. On mobile data, choose a lower quality in the player if it offers one, and consider restricting the app’s background data in Settings → Apps → [your player] → Mobile data.

Part 2: Android TV and Google TV devices

This covers Google TV streamers, Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield TV and TVs running Android TV or Google TV.

1. Install a TV-friendly player

1. From the home screen, search for “IPTV player” or open the Google Play Store.
2. Pick a player designed for a TV remote. TV-first players such as TiviMate offer a classic channel guide.
3. Select Install.

2. Enter your login

1. Open the player and choose to add a playlist.
2. Select Xtream Codes or M3U and enter your details.

Typing on a TV is slow, so install the Google TV app on your phone and use its remote keyboard, or use your player’s option to add details from another device if it has one.

3. Load the guide and organise

Let the channels and guide load fully on first launch, then add favourites and hide channel groups you do not use. Many TV players let you set the app to open automatically at start-up.

Part 3: Uncertified Android TV boxes

Some boxes run a version of Android without Google Play. If your player is not available in an app store on the box:

1. Download the player only from the developer’s official website in the box’s browser.
2. When prompted, allow the browser or file manager to install unknown apps (on older Android versions this is a single “Unknown sources” setting under Security).
3. Install the app, then turn the permission back off.

Settings worth checking on every device

• Decoder: set the player to hardware decoding for smooth HEVC and 4K playback. If one channel misbehaves, try software decoding for that channel.
• Buffer size: a slightly larger buffer can smooth playback on unstable connections.
• Stream format: if the player lets you choose between formats such as HLS and MPEG-TS, try the other when a stream stutters.
• EPG time offset: adjust if guide times do not match your time zone.
• Updates: keep the player updated from Google Play.

Troubleshooting

“Authorisation failed” or “Invalid login”. Recheck the server address, port and capital letters in your username and password.

Channels load but there is no guide. Refresh the EPG in the player’s settings and wait a few minutes. With M3U, make sure the EPG address is added.

The app closes or freezes on an older tablet. Clear the app’s cache in Settings → Apps, restart the device, or try a lighter player. Large channel lists can overwhelm devices with little memory.

Streams buffer. Move closer to the router or use a cable on TV devices. Our IPTV buffering guide explains every common cause.

Casting to the TV is choppy. Casting depends on the player and your Wi-Fi. For regular TV viewing, install a player directly on a Google TV or Android TV device instead.
