How to Set Up IPTV on iPhone and iPad

iPhone and iPad make great IPTV screens: bright displays, good speakers and easy ways to send video to a TV. Because Apple devices install apps from the App Store, setup is simple — the main decision is which player to use. This guide takes you from choosing an app to watching on the big screen.

Before you start

• Update to the latest iOS or iPadOS under Settings → General → Software Update.
• Have your IPTV login details ready: an Xtream Codes login or an M3U playlist link.
• Connect to Wi-Fi for the first setup, as channel lists and guides can be large.

Step 1: Choose an IPTV player

The App Store offers several IPTV players, and availability changes over time and between countries. Examples include GSE Smart IPTV and IPTVX. Rather than chasing a specific name, check that the app:

• supports your login format — Xtream Codes or M3U;
• has a programme guide (EPG);
• supports Picture in Picture and AirPlay;
• has been updated recently and has recent positive reviews;
• offers an Apple TV version, if you also want to watch on your TV.

Many players are free to try and charge a one-off fee or subscription for premium features. That payment goes to the app developer and is separate from your IPTV subscription.

Quick test option: the free VLC app can open a stream link under Network → Open Network Stream. It has no channel guide, but it is handy for checking whether a stream plays.

Step 2: Install the app

1. Open the App Store and search for the player.
2. Tap Get, then confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your password.
3. Open the app and allow any permissions it needs, such as local network access for AirPlay.

Step 3: Add your IPTV login

With an Xtream Codes login

1. Tap Add playlist, Add account or +, and choose Xtream Codes.
2. Enter the server address exactly as provided, including http:// or https:// and any port number.
3. Enter your username and password, then save.

With an M3U playlist link

1. Choose M3U or Playlist URL.
2. Paste the full link. If you were given a separate EPG address, add it in the app’s guide settings.

Tip: long-press the text in your login message and choose Copy, then long-press the field in the app and choose Paste. It avoids the typing mistakes behind most failed logins.

Step 4: Let everything load

Stay in the app while it loads channels, the programme guide and on-demand content for the first time. Then add your favourite channels so they are easy to find.

Step 5: Turn on Picture in Picture

Picture in Picture keeps video playing in a floating window while you use other apps.

1. Go to Settings → General → Picture in Picture.
2. Turn on Start PiP Automatically.
3. In your player, start a channel and swipe up to go home, or tap the Picture in Picture button.

Not every player supports it, which is why it is worth checking before you choose an app.

Step 6: Watch on your TV with AirPlay

If your player supports AirPlay, you can send the stream to an Apple TV or an AirPlay-compatible Smart TV:

1. Make sure your iPhone or iPad and the TV are on the same Wi-Fi network.
2. Start playing a channel and tap the AirPlay icon in the player.
3. Choose your TV.

If the app has no AirPlay button, you can use Screen Mirroring from Control Centre, but the picture is usually lower quality and slightly delayed.

Watching on Apple TV

For everyday TV viewing, installing a player directly on Apple TV is more reliable than AirPlay. Many iPhone players have an Apple TV version, and some sync your playlists through iCloud so you do not need to enter your login again. With an Apple TV 4K connected to a 4K TV, you can watch 4K content where it is available. iPhone and iPad screens have fewer pixels than a 4K image, so the difference is most visible on a TV.

Save mobile data

Streaming uses roughly 1.5–3 GB per hour in HD and 7 GB or more in 4K. To stop a player using mobile data, go to Settings → Mobile Data (called Cellular in some regions), find the app and switch it off. Then it will only stream over Wi-Fi.

Troubleshooting

Login fails. Recheck the server address, including http:// and the port number, and the capital letters in your username and password.

The channel list loads but streams will not play. Some players cannot play certain stream types. Try another channel, then test with a different player using the same details.

Video plays but there is no sound. Some channels use audio formats, such as AC-3, that certain players cannot decode. Check the player’s audio settings or try another player. Our guide to IPTV audio tracks and subtitles covers this in more detail.

The app disappeared from the App Store. Apps are sometimes removed or renamed. An app already on your device usually keeps working. If not, choose another compatible player and add your login again.
